Also, as a locum tenens, you can embrace a lot of opportunities to provide healthcare services to the rural community, where individuals desperately need more physicians and healthcare services. This provision makes locums a fulfilling experience.

      4. Doctors can do their jobs more efficiently.

In the usual schedule of doctors, about 27% of a doctor’s time is spent with the patients and the majority of work time is spent in the administrative work and formalities. However, with  locums, doctors get an opportunity to re-engage with your patients and concentrate on their medication and services.

Also, as locum tenens is always based on temporary assignments, there is less pressure on both the professional and social grounds of work. You can spend less time worrying about quarterly or annual reviews, and focus more on your everyday performance to help your patients feel better and healthier. You also get a chance to avoid all the workplace drama and gossip to create a much more pleasant working environment.

      5. Doctors can test many opportunities

Locum tenens can make a crucial positive impact on the healthcare sector. Doctors can travel to rural areas where people desperately need good quality healthcare services. With the help of locum tenens, hospitals can expand their positive patient care and also can offer a much greater range of services to the patients, regardless of where they live or what background they belong to.

      2. Hospitals can enhance employee and physician engagement.

For instance, hospitals generally have four general surgeons, out of which if one retires, or moves to another hospital; then there is a significant burden on the rest of the doctors. Every doctor gets more burdened with the more amount of patients and problems. To solve this, if a hospital hires a locum, then this gives relief to remaining doctors and they can concentrate on their chunk of work efficiently. Bringing in a locum tenens surgeon also helps in improving or maintaining high employee engagement and easy management.

      3. Hospitals can find efficient permanent employees.

Locum tenens are one of the most crucial tools in a recruiter’s toolkit to search the right person to get employed on key positions. They can test the abilities of the temporary doctors and in case they find them efficient enough to handle the permenent responsibility, then they can offer a permenent place for them in hospital functions. On the other hand, bringing in locum tenens medical staff also helps hospital to get time and breathing space to keenly analyse the candidates. and look for the best fit.

4.Locum tenens bring in a lot of business flexibility.

Trusted locum tenens partner allow administrators to bring in medical staff for shorter time periods of about 30 to 90 days, without having to sign a multi-year contract. This is particularly helpful when hospitals which are willing to bring in new programs and are not sure whether they will get the patient load to support it. Temporary staffing provides hospitals with the tools to ramp up their experimental programs and flexibility to close them down if it doe not work.

for healthcare providers is to help make care more efficient and accessible for as many Americans as possible. In this blog we’re going to explore three trends which are working towards that goal.

      1. Wearable Technology

This industry is currently enjoying a boom, with the expected value of the industry to reach somewhere in the vicinity of $31 billion by the end of 2020.

This is good news for consumers as wearable technology is enabling everyday users to keep track of their health. You can now get devices which track how many steps you take, your heart rate as well as sleep patterns.
There are even reports some companies, like United Healthcare Motion, who include fitness trackers as part of wellness program. What this means for their employees is that some of them can earn up $1,500 per year in incentives—all they have to do is meet specific walking goals each day.
Science & Medicine published a study which showed, on average, people tend to overestimate how much exercise they get by over 50 minutes. And they tend to underestimate sedentary time by over two hours. What this highlights is an importance of a wellness program like United Healthcare Motion’s.

      2. Workplace Wellness

This is a trend which should make any employee happy to hear about.
Aside from fitness trackers, some employers are promoting and incentivising good health and wellness. Employers are doing this through gift card, lower health insurance premiums, and even gym membership discounts.

It’s estimated 70% of American employers are already doing these workplace wellness initiatives. As good as this sounds, with some employees able to earn up $693 in incentives, fewer than half of eligible employees choose to earn the full incentive, leaving millions in unclaimed rewards.

      3. Value-Based Care

Again, this is another trend employee should be happy to hear about. A value-based care arrangement is when the health care providers that employees use are paid for the results they achieve (the quality of the outcome as well demonstrating how they have improved someone’s health) instead of getting paid for the number of services they provide patients.

Put simply: it’s about value rather than volume.

An article in the Harvard Business Review wrote about value-based care, calling it “The strategy that will fix health care.” The article finishes by saying that in the future this will be the only way healthcare is carried out because of greater transparency and falling reimbursement levels.

These are just three of the trends we’ll seeing growing over the coming years. As technology improves, information becomes more easily accessible, and the competitive nature of providing patients with the best care continues, the healthcare industry will continue to have an exciting future. One aimed at providing patients with the best care and service.

Aging in place: the big trend in American aged care

3 things you should know about aging in place

http://aginginplace.com defines aging in place as:

“Living where you have lived for years, typically not in a health care environment, using product, services and conveniences which allow you to remain home as circumstances change…you continue to live in the home of your choice safely and independently as you get older.”

Staying at home instead of going to an aged care facility sounds nice. Home is much more comfortable because it’s more familiar than an aged care facility. And for many it sounds easier not to have to sell their house and find somewhere they’d be happy to spend the rest of their days.
However, if you are thinking about aging in place, it does require some planning.

Here are 3 things you need to know to successfully, and safely, age in place.

      1. Changes you’ll need to make to your home

Did you know in America alone, 75% of accidental deaths in people over 65 were attributed to injury caused by falling? Ideally, for aging in place it’s better to live on one floor and minimize the need for stairs and:

• Widen doors and hallways to accommodate a wheelchair
• Install (or update) alarm systems
• Replace floor with slip-resistant materials
• Put in ramps

      2. Consider the cost of homecare

A recent study evealed 91% of pre-retirees wanted to either stay in their current house or at least avoid aged care facilities throughout retirement. And while this does sound like a nice idea, many don’t consider the financial, and practical, implications of this desire to stay at home, because the median cost of home health aide is $46,332 a year .
Another financial and practical consideration is the need to have a plan B. If one spouse is taking care of another, and they become unable to do it any longer, their family may need to consider an aged care facility.

      3. Maintenance costs

Eventually retirees will find themselves hard-pressed to do chores such as mowing the lawn and shovelling snow. For couples between 64-74 housing costs such as taxes, utilities and maintenance make up 30% of all expenses, according to a study by Boston College.

The key takeaway from this point is to make sure these expenses are accounted for when working out a retirement budget.

      4. Healthcare access and transportation

As we get older we need quite a few medical and dental professionals to help us stay healthy. This is why it’s important to ensure high-quality healthcare facilities are close by. It’s also why having access to good public transport systems, like buses, taxies, Uber and Lyft drivers is a must.
Good transportation isn’t just necessary for healthcare, it’s necessary for good quality of life; in that good transport lets retirees get out and about when they want to.

Aging in place is the desired way of life for retirees

Retirees want to stay in their own home

, on their own terms and live how they want to live. With a myriad of services now available it’s never been easier to make aging in place a possibility.

FOUR REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD USE LOCUM TENENS

First off, what’s the meaning of locum tenens? Locum tenens is a Latin word that roughly translates into “to hold a place”. Locum tenens physicians help or replace other physicians on a temporary basis, from a few days span to like six months or more. Locum tenens are a very useful and crucial part of the medical field most especially to facilities that are under-staffed. When a healthcare facility, or employer faces temporary conditions of staffing such as vacancies, illness, or some other cause, locum tenens physicians are called upon to help fill those vacancies and maintain adequate patient care.
While at first glance, facilities might not see the utilizing of locum tenens coverage as a solution to their problems, there are four vital reasons why medical employers benefit from the services provide by locum tenens providers.

      These advantages are listed below;

      REASON NUMBER ONE

     – PATIENTS VOLUME CAN BE BUILT UP IF LOCUM TENENS PROVIDERS ARE EMPLOYED
The number of patients a facility is able to safely see in a day will determine the profit that the healthcare provider brings to the facility. This is a very limited number. Now, what will happen if one of these health care provider doesn’t turn up in a day or resigns, but the facility is keen on seeing more patient each and every day in order to generate better revenue? The only reasonable step will be to employ the services of another healthcare provider. However, facilities are usually not able to support the requirements of a full time healthcare provider while they are trying to build up their patient load. This is where the importance of locum tenens providers is exercised as a major asset to any healthcare facility. With the help of locum tenens providers, facilities will be able to grow their patient load until they have the resources to employ the services of another full-time, permanent provider. Flexibility is something that can be found amongst locum tenens providers. They can be flexible with their schedule, and can also work up to full time as more patients start visiting a healthcare facility.

      REASON NUMBER TWO

-WHILE A FACILITY SEARCHES FOR ANOTHER PERMANENT PROVIDER, LOCUM TENENS PROVIDERS CAN CONTINUE SEEING THE PATIENTS
According to some recent researches, it takes a facility an average of 250 days or eight months for them to be able to locate a competent and permanent provider. So instead of leaving many people with no access to medical care and shutting their doors, locum tenens are hired to save the day. They are employed to fill in till a healthcare provider finds a suitable and competent permanent provider. Locum tenens providers will enable the facility to continue providing healthcare to patients, helping the facility remain in business, and helping them generate more revenue till a new permanent provider is found.

      REASON NUMBER THREE

     – PHYSICIAN BURNOUT IS AVOIDED WHEN YOU HIRE LOCUM TENENS PROVIDERS
Healthcare providers being away from their facilities simply means loss of revenue, longer waiting time, and might even lead to patients being angry due to appointment cancellations, etc. But employing the services of a locum tenens provider while a permanent healthcare provider is away will ensure that everyone remains happy. The permanent provider will be able to balance their personal life with their work, which will in turn provide them with the better ability to deal with patients. Patients on the other hand will also be happy as there will be no need for cancelled appointments and they’ll have their normal waiting times. The hiring of a locum tenens provider will also ensure that while a healthcare’s permanent provider is sick or on vacation, the facility will not lose revenue.

    REASON NUMBER FOUR

  – HEALTHCARE FACILITIES WILL BE ABLE TO MANAGE THEIR RISKS WITH LOCUM TENENS PROVIDERS One very important thing in healthcare facilities is the management of risks, especially as medical malpractice insurance is currently on the rise. Healthcare facilities can get less risks when they hire locum tenens providers than when they hire permanent placement providers. Facilities can provide locum tenens providers with some rigorous internal quality assurance check before they start working. Locum tenens providers will have to go through quality assurance check with every facility in which their services are being employed. Before they start working, they must have completed a series of these assurance checks in order to determine how capable and qualified they are. Additionally, facilities are exempted from paying medical malpractice insurance on the locum tenens providers they employ. This means that should a locum tenens provider be sued for a crime or something while working for the healthcare facility, the facility will be exempted from the financial burden and the patient’s reaction.

The link between dental health and overall health:

Healthcare is a business. A business that involves educating prospective patients on why your practice is better than your competitors. It also involves educating patients on regular check-ups being better than waiting for an emergency, or a severe problem.

Now, to most dentists this is obvious. A six-monthly check-up is clearly the better option for a patient because it can prevent serious problems from occurring.

However, most people don’t know this. They are of the mindset that if it doesn’t hurt, then nothing’s wrong.

Patient education will grow your practice:

Does your dental practice actively engage with the community? Does your website explain the benefits of check-ups and how gum disease has been linked to health concerns such as heart attacks, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and even cancer? Or why teeth whitening from a dentist is better than over-the-counter whitening products. After all, those whitening strips don’t actually whiten teeth they just dehydrate them to give the appearance of whiter teeth.

Dentists know this, but patients don’t.

Bridging that education gap between a dentist’s knowledge and patient’s is an important part of getting a person’s trust and turning that person into one of your patients.

Taking patient education to another level

American dentists, more than anywhere else in the world, are moving towards overall health education for the patients. Some even consulting with dieticians and nutritionists to help their patients understand the importance of diet for their dental and overall health and well-being.
The biggest reason for this is many people don’t understand how the mouth—teeth, gums, jaws, bite—can affect the rest of the body. Tell a patient their headaches are caused by a misaligned bite and they may look at you funny.

Or, how about that neck pain is caused by TMD? Or, that a patient grinds their teeth in their sleep because they’re stressed out at work.
Then there’s sleep apnea. Who knew dentists could treat snoring and airway problems?
Most people don’t.

Education widens a dentist’s patient base

The prevailing concept of a dentist is still: a person who treats teeth and makes teeth look good. Except dentists are so much more than that these days. And patients don’t know it.

The role of the dentist has changed as diets, lifestyles and attitudes towards health have changed. It’s now the role of the dentist to ensure people in their community understand the relation of dental health to overall health, and the importance of prevention.

Think about it like this: the more patients know, the more reason they have for attending regular dental check-ups.

Patient education will lead to practice growth if couched in terms of education and the benefit of seeing a dentist regularly in order save thousands of dollars by maintaining good oral health.

Have you heard of the gig economy, and how it’s helping keep American healthcare afloat?

      The gig economy:

from Uber to TaskRabbit and many others, the gig economy over the last 3 years has seen massive growth. And there’s one industry which has been doing gig work since about the 70s, and now it’s set for growth on an enormous scale.

In most industries, one could comfortably use the term gig: a writing gig, a taxi gig, a handyman gig. Not the medical profession. It’s either Latin or nothing.

The medical profession doesn’t do gigs, they do temp work, known as a locum tenens position. Locums tenens is a Latin phrase which means “to hold the place of”, “to substitute for”.

You may have heard of nursing agencies who used to send nurses out to hospitals, private practices, and other healthcare facilities looking for temporary staff. Locum tenens businesses send physicians, nurses and physician assistants to health care facilities looking for temporary staff.
The gig economy in America

A recent study revealed around 20-30% of American labor force is made up of contractors and self-employed workers. With these numbers expected to grow significantly. Which should not come as a surprise. The allure of not being tied to a desk working the tedious 9-5 has many people jumping ship and trying to captain their own.

For some this works: for many others, they find themselves back at a desk, unable to cope with the demands and fluctuations of the gig economy.

However, there is one industry where the gig economy is thriving.

      The healthcare gig economy

The demand for locum tenens physicians, nurses and physician assistants is on the rise. As Locums, Inc wrote in a previous blog 94% of health care facility managers have used a locum tenens physician in the last 12 months. They are easy to find, can work anything from one shift to a three month shift and don’t require the health care facility manger to commit to a full-time staff member if they don’t need one.
As the shortage of doctors in the US gets worse, the need for locum tenens nurses and primary care doctors increases.

      Healthcare and the American people

With the American healthcare landscape set to change over the coming months, many Americans could be left without access to healthcare, and health care facility managers could be struggling to fill full-time positions.

With locum tenens physicians and nurses, the stress can be alleviated from those facilities in need of staff now.

The primary benefit to a health care facility manager—aside from ensuring their patients get the care they need, and don’t go elsewhere—is that it gives them breathing room to find a physician or nurse to fill the full-time position. Or simply, handle a temporary surge of patients.
More of a band-aid than a cure

Locum tenens are a great way to help health care facilities when they’re in need. But it’s only a temporary solution. What America needs is a long-term plan to tackle the impending doctor shortage before the country finds itself 100,000 doctors shy of what it needs.

Locum tenens can help until that solution is found.

The benefit of this to patients is that leadership roles are being taken by people who understand the importance of patients and patient care.

Chief Medical Officers who were physicians understand that the financial bottom line doesn’t come at the expense of the patient, but rather is bolstered by the good health of patients.

Here’s what you should know about Chief Medical Officers (CMOs).

The top 3 responsibilities and priorities of CMOs

For CMOs today their most time-consuming responsibilities are (in no particular order):
• Medical staff affairs
• Physician engagement
• Patient safety and quality improvement

These responsibilities tie into to their priorities which are (in no particular order):

• Identifying and developing future physicians into leaders
• Corporate strategic planning among other executive leadership roles
• Patient safety and quality improvement

Did you notice the last bullet point is the same for both?

This should make patients feel a little better that CMOs spend as much of their time as administratively possible ensuring patients are taken care of. After all, what’s the point of a medical facility if not to take care of patients?

In fact, organizations spend as much as $100,000 developing physician leadership in up-and-coming physicians.

What CEOS look for in a chief medical officer. And what chief medical officers expect of themselves.

Unsurprisingly, CEOs are looking for CMOs who are passionate about patient safety and quality of care. As well as (in no particular order):

• Committed to organization’s values and mission
• Successfully encourage collaboration and teamwork among physicians
• Can lead standardized care processes

The qualities CMOs think are most important are similar to what CEOs look for as well as:

How CMOs succeed and why successful CMOs benefit patients

A successful CMO is able to be transformative. Not being stuck in the past allows for an engaged workforce which could lead to “outstanding business performance and operational success” according to an Integrated Healthcare Strategies report.

It’s all about patient care, experience and quality of treatment outcomes. Hospitals and private healthcare clinics can no longer afford to be cold or indifferent to patients (if, that is, they ever could). The internet has allowed patients to become far more educated than ever before.

The internet has also allowed patients to shop around before they chose a doctor. This is why focus on the patient experience and quality of care is high on the list of priorities for CEOs and CMOs.

If your hospital or private practice doesn’t take care of patient, or it has bad reviews online, people will go elsewhere.
As more physicians take leadership roles, let’s hope this only serves to improve the patient experience and quality of care.

Will It Be A Question Of Either IPhone Or Healthcare?

Once a glib remark about low-income Americans having to decide between a shiny new iPhone and healthcare. This has prompted political commentators to question if the republicans understand what it is for low-income Americans to be able to afford healthcare.

And it’s not just because congressman Jason Chaffetz made that astoundingly uneducated remark, comparing the choice to buy an iPhone compared to health insurance.

The republican’s proposed health care plan—which they are hoping will get enough votes to replace Obamacare (actually named the Affordable Care Act)—pretty much puts middle- to low-income Americans as well as senior citizens in a bad place.

Healthcare In American: Then And Now

Private healthcare as it’s known today did not really come into existence until around the end of World War II. In part, this happened because employers—in an attempt to attract more labor—starting offering health insurance as part of the job description.

There was also the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act which defined health insurance as a condition of employment, and was subject to collective bargaining. By 1950 over half of Americans had some type of private health insurance.

It wasn’t until 1965 that Medicare was introduced for Americans over 65, and then a year later Medicaid was introduced for low-income families, and people with certain disabilities.

Fast forward to 2010. Because between 1966 and 2010, some healthcare and health insurance changes happened, but were mostly just a variation on the theme that came before.

  The Affordable Care Act

Obama’s Affordable Care Act removed lifetime caps on claims, made coverage available to those with pre-existing conditions and generally just expanded insurance for more Americans.

Six years after the introduction of this Act, the number of uninsured Americans dropped under 9%—the lowest in decades. In contrast, only 9% had any sort of healthcare coverage pre-World War II.

  The Republican’s Health Care Plan

At this stage, what the republican’s want to do is still in the planning stage—there’s lots of parts of the Affordable Care Act they want to repeal, a few things they won’t. Most likely because not repealing certain parts will make them look good.

For someone who wanted to look after all of America, Trump’s administration appears to be helping the rich and not really caring about the poor. However, as the president is want to do, he has tweeted saying this is only the first stage. There are more revisions needed to the republican’s health care plan.

  Health Insurance Or IPhone

Congressman Jason Chaffetz later said he regretted phrasing his comments the way he did. He wasn’t sorry that it looks as though low-income Americans are going to struggle to afford healthcare, but he has said he was sorry for stating it so bluntly.

Of course, in comparing the purchase of a phone to the steep cost of healthcare for low-income earners, one can’t help but wonder if the rich republican congressman isn’t just a little out of touch with the world.

A Shortfall Of Up To 100,000 Physicians Is Expected In The U.S By 2025

By 2025, there will be an estimated shortfall of 35,600 primary care physicians and non-primary care specialties are set to experience a shortfall of 60,300 physicians.

These findings, made in 2016, are consistent with a 2015 report which also reported there will be a steep decline in specialists. This could not come at a worse time as the demand for physicians in America is on the rise.

It is especially bad news given the Trump administrations’ proposed travel ban which could see an estimated 70,000 physicians—if the band is put into full affect—forced to leave the country.

Primary Care Physicians In Highest Demand

It’s possible primary care physicians will make up a third of the looming shortage—making it even more difficult for you to see your primary care physician.

Primary care physicians handle check-ups as well as referring patients on to specialists. Essentially, these are our first line of defense for our health. Without access to regular checkups, it could cause American hospitals to see an overspill of seriously ill patients.

  What This Means For Patients

The primary care gap is more acute in roughly one-third of states, with these states having less than half of their primary care needs met.

The following numbers shows the percentage of care primary each state has, according to government statistics

      [2]

    :

Because doctors tend to cluster in big cities with high population density, it means the rural areas—as well as smaller communities—have a hard time acquiring and keeping primary care physicians. Which makes it more difficult for patients in those areas to acquire the health care they require on a regular basis.

What This Means For Health Care Facility Managers

Since primary care physicians are paid less than specialists, it’s treated as either a stepping stone into a specialty, or ignored completely.

The starting salary for specialties can range from $350,000 to as much as $600,000. In stark contrast, a primary care physician earns between $188,000 and a $199,000.

For health care facility managers, this makes it difficult to find and keep primary care physicians. Fewer American medical students are choosing this path, and those who normally would fill the numbers are on the verge on never being allowed back into the country—at least with the current president in power.

The Shortage Of Doctors Is Only Getting Worse

The reason fewer Americans are choosing to become primary care physicians isn’t just the money. Although that certainly plays a role.

The other problem, beside pay, is that being a primary care physician isn’t seen as glamorous—after all, a primary care physician doesn’t perform heart surgery, or brain surgery. All they really do is help to prevent you needing any sort of major surgery. Or, at least, mitigating some of the damage,

Did You Know 94% Of Healthcare Facility Managers Used Locum Tenens During The Last 12 Months?

Temporary staffing in the healthcare industry has been around since the 1970s. Forty years later and it has become the ideal solution for managing today’s healthcare environment.

The ability for healthcare facility managers to hire physicians, nurses or other medical professionals for a day, a week or even a few months has allowed both healthcare facilities and medical staff to be more flexible as the market and society changes.

It also has allowed medical professionals to either pick up extra shifts, or to indulge in their desire to travel and work; with statistics showing that unlike previous generations, modern locum tenens physicians are more speciality-based rather than generalists, enabling them to find work more easily.

47% Of Healthcare Facility Managers Actively Seek Locum Tenens Physicians

The number of healthcare facility managers actively looking for locum tenens physicians has been steadily rising since the turn of the century. 47% is the highest recorded number of healthcare facilities looking for locum tenens ever.

Primary care is where we are seeing the biggest increase. Locum tenens physicians who have a speciality in primary care have seen a 43.5% increase in demand. To put this in perspective, the number was 28% in 2012 and 35% in 2014.

The second highest area in demand is physicians who practice hospital inpatient medicine (known as hospitalists). The demand for hospitalists is followed by behavioural health providers and emergency medicine.

Demand For Locum Tenens NPs And PAs Continues To Accelerate

Currently, 26% of healthcare facility managers used a locum tenens NP or PA in the last 12 months. The figures from previous years were:

Why Are So Many Healthcare Facilities Using Locum Tenens Staff?

According to the same 2017 survey the above numbers have come from: the two biggest reasons healthcare facilities employ locum tenens staff are:

75% of healthcare facilities use locum tenens staff while they’re looking to fill permanent positions. This number is up from 68% in 2014.

74% say of healthcare facilities have used locum tenens staff to manage staff turnover. This number is up from 64% in 2014.

A third reason is when physicians go on vacation, with most—if not all—contracts stipulating vacation time for physicians. Instead of healthcare facilities ceasing to offer certain services, or not being able to maintain their current patient base, they hire locum tenens staff to maintain services and retain patients.

Are Locum Tenens Staff Worth The Cost?

Locum tenens staff allow healthcare facilities to continue operating at full capacity when staff are sick, on leave or have quit. Locum tenens staff also enable healthcare facilities to handle an increase in demand without having to commit to a full-time contract right away.

In order to meet the growing demands of the aged baby boomer generation, a primary care physician doesn’t work alone.

In fact, they work with a small army of other healthcare professionals to ensure their patients receive the care they need. Which is a good thing. Because studies have shown that in that in areas where there is more primary care, treatment outcomes are better and have lower costs.

Not only are outcomes better, but people are less likely to be hospitalized, and death rates from cancer, heart disease and stroke are lower. This is just one of the reasons primary care facilities are so important, and why ensuring they are staffed with competent staff is vital.

The Primary Care Shortage And Its Effects

According to an article in Forbes, if “we don’t have enough primary care physicians in this country, we are going to need to rely on more NPs and PAs to meet our primary care needs.”

The article focuses, not just on the shortage of primary care physicians, but on unnecessary medical care (telling someone they need an MRI for dehydration headache) and the need for more trained NPs (nurse practitioners) and PAs (physician assistants).

The conclusion of the Forbes article was focused around; education (after all, would you want to pay for an MRI if it was completely unnecessary) and increasing the number of primary care physicians as well as potentially widening the role and responsibilities of NPs and PAs.

However, whether or not these suggestions will be implemented remains to be seen, as the country’s new administration is still working on a national healthcare plan.

How The Shortage Is Being Managed

How the shortage is being managed varies from state to state. With one exception. Over 47% of primary care facilities are hiring locum tenens staff to handle staff shortages, sick leave and staff on vacation.

Being able to hire locum tenens staff who will work a few days, a week or even a few months has enabled primary care facilities to continue to provide this vitally necessary service to their community.

It has also enabled them to hire staff for busy periods without having to try find (and afford) another full-time staff member they may not need. Or, to sustain an influx of patients while they look for a permanent staff member.

Locum Tenens: Are They The Best Long-Term Solution?

While locum tenens physicians, NPS and PAs are useful, and worthwhile, they cannot solve the shortage of primary care staff indefinitely.

They will certainly always be around to provide the help and support primary care facilities need, but a long-terms solution will have to be established to ensure the continued good health of America’s aging population.

With the spike in popularity of hiring locum tenens physicians in a wide range of specialty fields, we thought we would take a look at just 3 of the reasons locum tenens work can be the ideal career path.

  Reason One:

      A Hassle-Free Career

A locum tenens physician has no administrative or teaching responsibilities. Nor are there any billing hassles or staff management issues.

For physicians who enjoy their job, and only want to do the job they studied hard for, locum tenens work provides them with the opportunity to only do what they’re good at. Leaving the administrative work for the healthcare facility manager.

There’s also the benefit of having a more defined work schedule. When you’re rostered to work, you’re working. And when you’re off, you’re not on call or expected to work extra hours for free.

You aren’t tied down to one place. If you’re dissatisfied with a place you’re working, there’s no contract that says you have to say. Being locum tenens provides you with the flexibility and peace of mind to (almost) come and go as you please.

  Reason Two: Freedom To Travel

For those with the desire to travel for more than a few weeks each year, locum tenens work is the perfect solution.

In fact, the freedom to travel is probably the best-known benefit of locum tenens work. You get to travel, and travel with purpose. You have the unique opportunity to help out communities in diverse places while experience all the benefits that come with seeing and experiencing new places.

Traditionally, this benefit holds more appeal for new physicians looking to start out their career, and to older physicians looking for a little variety as they near retirement.

In recent years, mid-career physicians have taken up the opportunity to travel and explore different parts of the country, as well as be able to control where they go and how much work they do.

  Reason Three: Pre-Retirement Planning

Physicians who are ready to retire, or planning on retiring inside a few years, have found locum tenens work appeals to their lifestyle. They want to stay in medicine, but they don’t want to work full-time and they don’t want to handle the running of a practice.

Working locum tenens allows them to maintain their skills in medicine, help people and stay active. This means that healthcare facilities across America are able to benefit from the decades of medical experience and patient care of these ready-to-retire physicians who still want to occasionally work.

The Many Benefits Of Locum Tenens Work

These are just 3 of the benefits of locum tenens work for physicians. Whether you’re just starting out, in the middle of your career and want a change, or aren’t quite ready to give up practicing medicine just yet, locum tenens work could be the answer you’re looking for.

It iѕ imроrtаnt tо rеmеmbеr thаt urgent саrе dоеѕ not ѕubѕtitutе еmеrgеnсу саrе. There аrе ѕituаtiоnѕ thаt аrе considered an emergency аnd аѕ ѕuсh thеу ѕhоuld bе treated bу checking thе patient tо thе ER in a well-equipped fасilitу bесаuѕе thеу саn еndаngеr thе life оr permanently imраir thе раtiеnt. Dеер knifе wound, seizures, ѕеvеrе сhеѕt раinѕ and рrеgnаnсу rеlаtеd рrоblеmѕ аnd many оthеrѕ аrе аll ѕеriоuѕ and considered аn еmеrgеnсу.

                    1. Urgent саrе сliniсѕ require no арроintmеnt and hеnсе раtiеntѕ саn wаlk in to gеt treatment they nееd. This iѕ a major benefit, especially соnѕidеring thаt уоu can be faced with ѕuddеn hеаlth iѕѕuеѕ thаt lеаvе уоu vеrу соnсеrnеd ѕuсh thаt уоu just саn’t wait.

Thе urgеnt саrе service providers will uѕuаllу remain ореn during wееkdауѕ аnd weekends аnd ѕоmе even rеmаin open rоund the сlосk juѕt so уоu can access thе ѕеrviсеѕ аѕ thеу аriѕе. Thе flеxiblе hоurѕ offer lоtѕ of соnvеniеnсе, еѕресiаllу for patients whо hаvе buѕу ѕсhеdulеѕ; уоu can check into thе center even after hаving уоur dinnеr.

Thе wаiting time аt аn ER dераrtmеnt can bе a littlе lоngеr considering how ѕеriоuѕ, ѕоmе оf the rесеivеd саѕеѕ can be. But bесаuѕе the urgеnt саrе сliniсѕ оnlу deal with minоr hеаlth iѕѕuеѕ, thеrе аrе uѕuаllу no lоng linеѕ tо dеаl with and уоu саn gеt trеаtеd аѕ ѕооn as уоu gеt thеrе ѕо уоu spend very littlе timе аt the сliniс.

                    4. Thе сеntеrѕ саn соmе complete with lab testing аnd X-rау ѕеrviсеѕ ѕо thаt diаgnоѕiѕ fоr раtiеntѕ iѕ mаdе fаѕtеr. Yоu might also be very lucky to get a fасilitу that саn refill your рrеѕсriрtiоn ѕаving уоu thе trip to уоur hеаlthсаrе рrоvidеr when the time iѕ not convenient еnоugh.

                    5. They offer the services are vеrу reasonable costs. Thiѕ mеаnѕ that уоu саn hаvе уоur health concerns settled on a рriсе that уоu саn аffоrd.

A gооd urgеnt care center ѕhоuld offer thе necessary ѕеrviсеѕ fоr thе mеdiсаl ѕituаtiоnѕ thаt are nоt life threatening. Thе best fасilitiеѕ will аttеnd to аdult and аlѕо реdiаtriс раtiеntѕ and should hаvе the nесеѕѕаrу mеdiсаl еԛuiрmеnt likе X-ray machines ѕо уоu do nоt end up bеing ѕеnt to аnоthеr рlасе fоr such services. However, viѕiting thе dentist саn be ѕсаrу to a child, asking him to lie оn a chair, in a room hе has nеvеr ѕееn bеfоrе, which iѕ ѕurrоundеd bу unusual objects аnd nоiѕеѕ, while аn unfаmiliаr реrѕоn роkеѕ соld, strange inѕtrumеntѕ inside hiѕ mоuth. In аdditiоn, ѕinсе уоur сhild’ѕ teeth will соntinuе to fаll оut then grоw, hе will hаvе tо viѕit thе dеntiѕt аt least 10 timеѕ before gоing to kindеrgаrtеn ѕсhооl. For dеntаl viѕitѕ tо bе mоrе rеlаxеd for your child аnd thе dеntiѕt, consider thе fоllоwing tiрѕ that mау help еаѕе thе tеnѕiоn:

It wоuld best tо let a сhild visit thе dеntiѕt еаrlу in lifе. This way, уоur сhild will learn to bе familiar with thе dеntаl clinic, whеrе аll hiѕ dental needs will bе cared for, frоm сlеаning tо emergencies. The firѕt viѕit ѕhоuld tаkе рlасе when the сhild iѕ оnе year old, or whеn thе first tооth еmеrgеѕ.

Whеn visiting thе dеntiѕt fоr the first timе, rеfrаin frоm аdding many details. Thiѕ might rаiѕе аdditiоnаl questions, аnd giving mоrе infо about further treatment – such аѕ a nееdеd tооth filling – might саuѕе nееdlеѕѕ аnxiеtу. Maintain a роѕitivе outlook whеn tаlking аbоut a fоrthсоming viѕit, but nеvеr givе fаlѕе hope. There are parents who make thе miѕtаkе оf tаking аlоng thеir сhildrеn tо thеir dental арроintmеnt. Some раrеntѕ fееl anxious when they visit thеir dеntiѕt without knowing it, аnd ѕоmеhоw, thiѕ аnxiеtу is felt by thеir child. Talking about extractions аnd rооt canals may cause аррrеhеnѕiоn, еѕресiаllу since the сhild mау not nееd ѕuсh рrосеdurеѕ. Bringing уоur сhild to a sterile сliniс fоr аdultѕ givеѕ a wrоng notion аbоut dentists, whilе majority оf pediatric dental clinics аrе relatively сhild-friеndlу with their kiddу ѕhоwѕ, video games аnd pleasant pictures.

This is worrying news for everyone — patients will be waiting longer to receive medical care, and practices will be at a loss to hire practitioners to meet growing demand.

Here’s a quick rundown of the problem, and how it will affect healthcare in the country without efforts made to reverse the situation.

A Few More Physicians, A Lot More Patients

First of all, it’s not that the number of active physicians every year is going down. On the contrary, the total number of physicians — both in general care and specialist practice — is actually going

      up

    .

The problem is, it’s not going up quite fast enough.

Between 2010 and 2015 the number of active specialist physicians only rose by about 2%. Residency slots are increasingly steadily, but by about 1% per year.

Meanwhile, America faces a threefold problem when it comes to the number of patients it needs to care for.

The first problem is that the population is increasing. This is a natural process for any developed nation.

Unfortunately, the second problem is that the population is

      ageing

. More people are living to older and older ages than previous generations. Baby boomers in their 60s and 70s have more medical problems, and more complex ones, than people in their 20s, for example. This requires not only more general care, but also more specialist care to treat issues like arthritis and cardiovascular problems.

Lastly, the Affordable Care Act has given many more Americans access to healthcare than in the past. This has accelerated the need for more physicians, to meet the growing demand.

Lack of Funding for New Physicians

Graduate medical education in the USA is largely funded by Medicare. Medicare funding hasn’t been increased since 1997 with the introduction of the Balanced Budget Act; this capped the spending on residency training positions within the country.

The Associate for American Medical Colleges argues that increased funding is needed for an additional

more doctors every year. This is particularly pertinent for areas of healthcare where physicians are decreasing; general surgeons are in short supply and active psychiatrists have dropped almost 1.5% from 2010 to 2015.

But is more funding for more physicians the only answer? It’s certainly necessary, but it’s also important to look at the other solutions we already have that are being under-utilized.

    The Solutions We Already Have

All of this data and worry is based on one thing: looking at the total number of doctors versus the demand for patient care. This is an important metric, but it ignores many other facets of health care that could compensate for the shortage.

Nurse practitioners, for example, are fully qualified to provide primary care to a variety of patients. Family, emergency, and even specialist areas — nurse practitioners can be qualified and authorized to provide primary care for all of them. But their numbers aren’t considered when talking about a provider shortage.

Redistribution of physicians is another option. When looking at the total population, the USA has few doctors per 1,000 people — just 2.56, compared to 4.99 in Australia — but many of these are clustered in busy city centers. So while some places face a drastic shortage of physicians, others may have enough or even too many on-hand.

New technologies also aren’t being taken into consideration. Telehealth, whereby consults can be done at distance, could alleviate the need for redistribution of physicians and also increase the ability of physicians to help more people. Medicines and devices which can treat easily treated problems could drastically lower the workload on physicians if they were made more available.

    The list goes on.

So while it’s true that there is a shortage of physicians, and that an increased number of active physicians is necessary, we should begin looking at the broader picture of healthcare to realize what alternative options there are to alleviate the shortage and provide better care to patients across the country.

Many physicians report that a sense of engagement is key to deciding whether to stay with a practice or leave. The less engaged the physician feels, the more likely they are to leave.

Here are three tips for retaining physicians once you’ve recruited them.

Work-life balance is a chief desire amongst most workers in any industry. An ability to engage in work you love without sacrificing personal time is high on most people’s priorities.

Flexible scheduling for your physicians will be paramount to retaining them. Keep in mind not everyone will want, or feel the need for, flexible scheduling. Simply letting them know it’s a viable option can be enough to create a pleasant working environment.

Four day work weeks, part-time schedules, job sharing, and reduced calls are all forms of flexible scheduling you can offer your physicians.

It’s important, however, to also ensure you’re clear with the expectations you have of part-time and flexible schedules upfront. Being vague or unclear will only make matters worse if you ever have to pull someone up for not meeting expectations they weren’t aware you had.

    2. Establish a Healthy Work Environment

“Cultural fit” is an interesting concept that’s been developing in business over the past few years, but an important one to be aware of. Every workplace is different, regardless of the industry. The way you run a practice and the staff you choose all contribute to the feel and functionality of your practice.

When recruiting physicians, you should have systems in place for determining whether they’re a good fit for your practice. Conflict management, teamwork, communication skills — these are all important attributes that you must examine and assess during the recruitment phase to avoid problems later.

Once a physician is recruited, incorporate these desired traits into your performance appraisals to incentivize these behaviors in the future.

    3. Don’t Rush the On-boarding

Your on-boarding procedures should begin the minute an employment contract is signed. Don’t wait until the start date to keep communication flowing; maintain contact with the physician even before they begin. This all goes back to the feeling of engagement that’s so important.

Assign an on-boarding specialist to be your new physician’s single point of contact for questions and concerns. They should be in charge of keeping track of the physician’s progress through the process.

Make sure your milestones and expectations are clear. Give the entire process up to 12 months to fully develop the physician’s practice and ensure they’re fitting in and providing the best care possible.
